We are thrilled to unveil our latest project – The Street, by Amey – a brand-new school meal and canteen experience now available in selected Renfrewshire Schools. Our collaboration with Amey aimed to create an inviting atmosphere in both school meals and the canteen, ultimately enhancing the appeal and promoting the benefits of nutritious school meals.
In the face of challenges posed by high street and local convenience stores, Scottish schools are actively addressing the importance of school meals. Particularly, free school meals play a crucial role in improving nutrition for students of all backgrounds and combating food poverty.
Free school meals were introduced and have been available in some for in the UK and Scotland for over a century. Now, all students in Scotland from Primary 1 to Primary 5 are entitled to free school meals, with students above Primary 5 being eligible if their parents or gaurdians are on low income or specific financial support. Poor nutrition and hunger impact a students health, wellbeing, ability to learn and general growth. School meals help address these problems, but can be faced with low usage due to stigma or being seen as 'not cool', competition from less healthy fast food on the high street, or sometimes even perceived quality. Utilising a revamped menu and a new brand, Amey aimed to address these issues and provide a better experience for students.
Throughout the years, we've partnered with various local authorities, recognising the impact of branding and design in effectively conveying messages that were traditionally harder to promote. 'The Street', coupled with an innovative menu, has led to a significant uptick in the utilisation of free school meals and cashless sales. Notably, St Benedict's has witnessed an impressive 62% increase in free school meals and consistent month-on-month sales growth.
